Speculative Review: Joe Johnston's CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
Oh my, this is an improvement over the first teaser. There’s actually a sense of drama and a story unfolding, whereas before they only gave us spastic action shots. The music is mostly standard fare except for a slick moment around 1:26 that feels nice and badass, but the overall trailer does a nice job of setting the movie up as an origin story, introducing the main protagonists, and conveying a sense of impending threat without revealing too much about the villain or the plot.
One thing definitely catches the eye, though: that CG body on Chris Evans looks like a low-budget parody. It’s like they just stuck his head on there, without any attention to scale or skin tone. Weird. Luckily, it doesn’t seem like it’ll be too big a distraction; just a minor mark against suspension of disbelief.
This movie has a few things going for it. The cast is the main attraction. I can’t wait to see Hugo Weaving doing his thing as the Red Skull, Cap’s arch-nemesis, and I’m ecstatic that they haven’t shown him much in the ads. Chris Evans is a really likable actor, and he’s perfect for this role. And then you’ve got Tommy Lee Jones and Stanley Tucci in the mix as well, giving even more thespian weight to what might otherwise be a brain-dead actioner.
But then there’s the matter of Joe Johnston. His career has been inconsistent at best, and his last movie, The Wolfman, wasn’t anything special. His involvement helming the project casts the entire thing in a suspicious light.
